1. GC-200: The “Dragon’s Road” – Coastal Thrills from Puerto de Mogán to Agaete

Okay, let’s start with a legend. The GC-200, known as the “Dragon’s Road” (read our dedicated article), is easily one of the most breathtaking coastal routes in Europe. Imagine roughly 40 kilometers of pure riding bliss, carving its way from the charming Puerto de Mogán (the “little Venice” of Gran Canaria) up towards the welcoming town of Agaete, with it’s wonderful natural pools. This isn’t just a ride; it’s an experience that burns itself into your memory.

As you roll onto the tarmac, you’re greeted by smooth, inviting curves that practically pull you into the lean. It’s like the road itself is welcoming you. Then, the drama unfolds. To one side, the vast, sparkling Atlantic stretches to the horizon; to the other, colossal volcanic cliffs rise like ancient sentinels. The contrast between the deep blue water and the dark, rugged rock is simply stunning. You’ll find yourself pulling over frequently just to absorb the sheer scale of it all.

Along this route, make sure to check out Playa de Aldea de San Nicolas. It’s a genuine slice of local life, a laid-back village with a distinctive black pebble beach – perfect for grabbing a coffee and soaking in the authentic island atmosphere. Cyclists often talk about the tough climbs around here, which tells you we’re in for some engaging sections demanding focus and smooth throttle control.

Further along, prepare for the Mirador del Balcon. This viewpoint is nothing short of spectacular. Standing over 400 meters above the waves, the panorama sweeps across 270 degrees, offering one of Europe’s most incredible coastal vistas. You’ll see the dramatic coastline unfurl beneath you, and on clear days, Tenerife’s majestic Mount Teide looms in the distance. Your camera will get a workout here.

Don’t miss the Charcos Azules either – fascinating, colourful rock formations sheltering lovely little pools. A short walk down allows a closer look at the island’s unique geology and provides a great leg stretch.

Now, the ride itself: the GC-200 is pure exhilaration. The curves are relentless, and the elevation changes keep you fully engaged. Be mindful of the Atlantic winds, which can be quite potent in exposed sections, and be ready for temperature shifts as you climb from sea level to around 600 meters. The road surface is generally good, but always stay alert for the occasional uneven patch. It’s a true “Dragon’s Road,” offering that perfect blend of coastal beauty and mountain challenge. 2. GC-500: Southern Coast Cruise – Sunsets from Maspalomas to Mogán

Looking for something a bit more laid-back but equally stunning? The GC-500 tracing the southern edge of Gran Canaria is calling your name. This route takes you past some of the island’s most famous sights – the iconic dunes and lighthouse of Maspalomas, the lively resort town of Puerto Rico, the gorgeous white sands of Anfi del Mar, and the inviting turquoise waters of Amadores beach – ultimately leading towards the picturesque Puerto de Mogán.

Where the GC-500 truly comes alive is during sunset. Cruising along this coastal stretch as the sky erupts in fiery colours is pure motorcycling magic. This route is all about soaking in the coastal scenery at a relaxed pace, feeling the sea breeze, and enjoying those incredible Gran Canaria sunsets. It’s perfect for days when you just want to unwind on the bike. While you’re exploring, you’ll hear Puerto de Mogán called “Little Venice” due to its charming canals and bridges – definitely worth a stop.
Please note that this popular southern area can experience heavier traffic, especially during peak season. Additionally, the road between Taurito and Playa de Mogán has been closed for a long time. To reach Playa de Mogán, you’ll need to return to Tauro and take the highway.
No worries, though—the drive back from Taurito to Tauro is very scenic, and the highway ride takes only about five minutes.

3. GC-600: Ride to the Roof – Smooth Tarmac and Mountain Vistas

For those of us who live for the thrill of mountain passes and breathtaking panoramic views, the GC-600 is an absolute must. This road has benefited from recent resurfacing, meaning one thing: smooth, glorious asphalt winding through what feels like an endless series of curves. The GC-600 takes you right up into the highest parts of the island before descending down the northern slopes, passing through charming little villages with incredible views stretching towards Las Palmas in the distance.

Riding the GC-600 is pure joy, thanks to that fresh tarmac. The grip is fantastic, inspiring confidence as you carve through the bends. As you reach the higher elevations, the feeling of being on top of the world, with views stretching out endlessly, is unbeatable. The descent into the north offers a glimpse into local life as you pass through quaint villages, all set against that stunning backdrop. That smooth surface makes a huge difference, enhancing both comfort and the sheer pleasure of the ride.

4. GC-60: The Fataga Valley Climb – South Coast to Island Peaks

The GC-60 offers a fantastic journey connecting the sun-drenched south near Maspalomas with Artenara, the island’s highest inhabited village. For the truly adventurous, a short detour leads to Pico de las Nieves, the absolute highest point on Gran Canaria.

Riding the GC-60 is like traversing the island’s soul. As you climb from the southern coast, the landscape transforms dramatically – from sandy environs near the dunes, through lush palm oases within the Valley of Fataga, into dramatic gorges, and finally onto winding mountain roads. The views, both ascending and descending, are simply stunning. However, be warned: the GC-60, particularly the southern section through the Fataga Valley, can get quite busy with tour buses and cars, so sharp awareness and defensive riding are essential. Despite the potential traffic, the sheer variety of scenery encountered, from coast to peak, makes this route completely worthwhile. And those panoramic views from Pico de las Nieves? Unforgettable.

5. GC-210: The Daredevil’s Delight – Technical Twists and Wild Beauty (Includes Fast & Furious Scenery!)

Alright, adrenaline seekers, listen up! The GC-210 is a road that demands respect and rewards skill. It starts in Aldea de San Nicolas and ends in Artenara. The initial part is narrow with a rougher surface, but the feeling of remoteness and the wild beauty are incredible. It genuinely feels like you’ve stumbled onto a movie set – and indeed, parts of this dramatic landscape near the reservoirs were featured in Fast & Furious 6! You’ll often have this stretch almost entirely to yourself.

Then comes the real test: in less than ten minutes of climbing, you encounter 32 incredibly tight hairpin turns, stacked one after another. This is seriously technical territory, requiring solid bike control and experience. It’s definitely not for novice riders. But for those with the skills, conquering this section is immensely satisfying. After the intense hairpins, the road thankfully opens up, the tarmac improves, and you find yourself riding through beautiful pine forests, passing through tiny, isolated villages. Cyclists refer to this climb as “the valley of tears” (Valle de las Lagrimas), which gives you an idea of the challenge. It’s an amazing ride, but approach it with caution.

6. GC-220: Gran Canaria’s Green North – A Relaxing Ride Through “Little Scotland”

The riding here is far more relaxed than its neighbour, the GC-210, making it perfect for a leisurely cruise where you can truly soak in the beauty and atmosphere. You’ll pass through numerous small villages, getting a feel for the local way of life – it’s a truly charming experience. That “Little Scotland” nickname really captures the unique feel of this verdant part of the island.

7. GC-130: Smooth Ascent to the Summit – Sweeping Curves to Pico de las Nieves

The GC-130 is a personal favourite route for ascending to the island’s peak, Pico de las Nieves, starting from near Telde, or for enjoying an exhilarating descent. This road features amazing views, long, sweeping curves that are an absolute joy to ride, and generally excellent tarmac. It’s often my go-to when approaching the summit from the east side.

Once you reach Pico de las Nieves via the GC-130, you have a hub connecting to other fantastic high-altitude routes. What makes the GC-130 appealing is that it’s not overly technical. Even riders who aren’t seeking extreme challenges can thoroughly enjoy the flowing ride and the incredible scenery. That smooth tarmac combined with those satisfying, long curves makes for a genuinely pleasurable experience on two wheels.
